Popis: Influenced by seminal work in music and chess, sport expertise and talent development has been dominated by the idea that “10,000 hours” or ”10 years” of deliberate practice (i.e., practice that is highly structured, effortful, and low in enjoyment) is necessary to achieve expertise (Baker & Farrow, 2015; Ericsson, Krampe & Tesch-Römer, 1993). As a result, it has been a widely held assumption that in order to achieve the necessary volume of practice to become an expert, one should specialise or engage in intensive training as early as possible (Baker, Cobley & Fraser-Thomas, 2009). Recent evidence, however, suggests that particular sports experiences may reduce the amount of sport-specific practice required to achieve expertise (Abernethy et al., 2005) through the emergence of generalised skill transfer (e.g., general athletic development) or specific skill transfer (e.g., learning to attune to specifying information sources) (Chow, Shuttleworth, Davids & Araujo, 2020).
