This work is evaluating the typically applied iron loss modeling for radial flux machines. The particular focus is on a comparison with true loss characteristics derived by utilizing a measurement setup with a disc shaped specimen. The 2D flux density trajectories along the machine’s cross section, obtained through the finite element analysis (FEA), feature significant differences in shape depending on which part of the machine is analyzed, e.g., a stator tooth or the stator yoke. In order to facilitate a detailed evaluation and comparison, the flux density trajectories obtained for each finite element in FEA will be automatically measured using the presented setup. This further allows for studying the loss density over the soft magnetic material’s cross section and to identify local errors made when using typically applied loss modeling approaches. The obtained results thus provide interesting insights that can stimulate future modeling improvements by focusing on flux density trajectories where most significant discrepancies are discovered. |
