A monitoring and forecasting system is needed for bioregional planning, natural resource policy analysis and management strategy testing in California. The advantages of qualitative, rule-based models, and a state-transition paradigm to build ecosystem models are discussed. An intelligent geographic information system to model the effects of fire, grazing, thinning and protection on species composition, canopy coverage and resource values in the woodland is presented. Conceptual issues and possible improvements are discussed. > |
