Popis: The Spanish Romani Women’s Movement emerged in the 1990s through the acknowledgement of the internal diversity of Gitano communities and as a response to the perceived lack of representation of gender diversity within the so-called Romani movement. This chapter aims to explore the genealogy of Gitanas movement in Spain by reconstructing its birth, evolution, and its underlying rationale. The dynamic influence of Gitanas movement has also influenced the international Romani women’s movement. By recalling several occasions which brought together Spanish Gitanas and Romani women from Central and East European (CEE) countries, providing a space to share their vision of women’s activism, the article traces how these transformative dialogues in the early 1990s led to the gradual articulation of Romani women’s issues and the development of a Romani feminist consciousness, both in Spain and in CEE countries.
