Popis: | High plasma low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis and subsequently, cardiovascular disease (CVD). This epidemiological relationship is highlighted by the early expression of coronary disease in patients with inherited dyslipidemia. In the general population, pharmacological reductions in plasma LDL-C reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality significantly. Our understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms in inherited hypercholesterolemia is leading the way to the discovery of new targets for the management of hypercholesterolemia per se . In fact, new options for lipid management are currently being developed for clinical use. Several new key therapies are presented in this review. |
