The recent and rapid decline in adoptable infants in the Netherlands has brought about an increase in the use of artificial insemination, and changing cultural views have influenced the question of the use of donor semen. Women who feel themselves capable of childbearing prefer to mother their own natural children; their infertile husbands understand this and feel that it is preferable for these children to be brought up by at least one natural parent. Thus, if there is a stable marriage and a deep desire to have children AID can be started. The only important fact is that according to Dutch law the husband must recognize the future child as his legal child. We do not demand prior psychological evaluation of the future parents, for the value of this remains in our opinion unclear. |
