Popis: | This study examined beliefs related to wife battering by the Yoruba-speaking people of southwestern Nigeria. Cultural beliefs about the role of the wife beater were reviewed and contemporary views on the topic explored. The subjects of the study were 130 married adults, 73 males and 53 females, selected from Ile-Ife, a town in the southwestern part of Nigeria. A purposive sampling technique was used in the selection of subjects, and questionnaires were used to collect relevant data. A majority of respondents did not support wife beating, but a significant minority reported more traditional views. There was no significant relationship between views about wife battering and age (adults versus elders), religion (Christian versus other), or income level (high versus low). However, there was less support for wife beating among literate compared to illiterate respondents.
