This paper highlights features of a 2,700-square-meter (29,000-square-foot) replacement facility that will provide multipurpose support to the U.S. Coast Guard's (USCG) operations worldwide. An overview of the planning for the pier will highlight the decision to reduce (notch) the new pier width from the existing width and will address operational and environmental issues. Significant design features will also be described, including the two-level force-based earthquake design criteria for both nonliquefied and liquefied soil conditions and the displacement-based criteria used in the review of the structural performance. A description of the underwater wall required for the notched pier, supporting a 9.1-meter (30-foot) high cut of potentially liquefied soil, will also be included. |
