Popis: | The authors use ultrashort laser pulses to generate a highly non-equilibrium excited state in simple metallic ferromagnets, iron and nickel, in order to elucidate the differences between magnetic excitations and magnons. Utilizing extreme ultraviolet light, with energies covering core-level excitations, corroborated with density functional theory calculations, the paper shows that each type of excitation provide a fingerprint in the experimental signal. |
