Kenneth Hill and colleagues, in their ex cellent review of worldwide maternal mortality ratios from 1990 to 2005 (Oct 13, p 1311), state that the maternal mortality ratio (MMR) for Bangladesh in 2000 was 570 (uncertainty bounds 380–760) per 100 000 livebirths. In their view, Bangladesh is in Group G, Uganda’s fi rst Infectious Disease Institute; Novartis the Singapore Tropical Disease Research Institute; AstraZeneca the Infectious Disease Institute in India; GlaxoSmithKline a new neglected disease research facility in Spain; and Bristol-Myers Squibb Africa’s fi rst AIDS Research Laboratory, located in Botswana, and operated by Harvard University. If WHO is to sustain its role as the legitimate intergovernmental au thority on global health matters, then it should be inclusive and recognise all research eff orts that have broadly contributed towards improvements in the health status of our most vulnerable population groups. |
