Popis: Electrical area classification began in the coal mining industry and has grown today into one of the major safety systems for the petroleum and chemical industry. This paper traces the developments in chronological order and gives some thoughts on the future. The activities of the following organisations in this area are discussed: National Fire Protection Agency; IEEE; and the American Petroleum Institute.
