Popis: Despite popularity of research on emotion suppression, the moderating effects of trait emotionality on different methods for suppressing emotion remain relatively unexamined. To address this issue, we experimentally tested suppression of emotional expression versus emotional experience on multiple emotions among individuals with varying levels of trait negative affect (NA). Participants were randomly assigned to suppress expression or experience, or to pay attention (control) during a sadness- and anxiety-inducing film clip and a subsequent 2-minute recovery period. Results revealed moderating effects of trait NA and variable effects of suppression across each emotion. There was no effect of experimental group on sadness, anxiety or cardiac responding, but participants suppressing expression showed decreased anxiety and cardiac responding associated with increased levels of trait NA compared to other groups. There were no effects of suppressing experience compared to controls for self-reported emotion or physiology. Findings suggest that individual differences in trait emotionality influence the effects of suppressing expression, that the effects of suppressing emotion may depend on the emotion suppressed, and that these forms of suppression do not constitute the same emotion regulatory process. Additional theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.
