Popis: Research on sex differences in psychomotor reminiscence across the life span is reviewed and critically examined in relation to inhibition and consolidation theories of reminiscence. Major findings indicate that both the polarity of the differences and the absolute magnitude of reminiscence vary systematically with age, the most prominent features of which are shifts from male superiority in childhood to female superiority in young-adulthood to gender equality in old age. Evidence suggests that female superiority arises with the onset of menstrual cycling and fluctuates with levels of estrogenic hormones. These and related facts seem to place reminiscence firmly within the framework of developmental processes across the life span, and they appear to be more readily accommodated by inhibition theory than by consolidation theory. Interfaces between inhibition theory and contemporary developmental theories of sex differences are identified and discussed.
