In this ambitious and innovative project, local and regional authorities, together with social and private sector housing developers, have implemented low to zero-emission urban developments. They aim to demonstrate that PV can be implemented in a normal but appealing way when fully integrated in the urban planning process. This paper reports on the results of the SunCities project and the merits of integration of PV in the urban planning process. The risks associated with large-scale PV are identified, and ways to manage these for the traditionally risk-avoiding building industry have been found. Other results were lower PV prices, a new laminate mounting system and a guarantee fund. The large scale (number of houses) is still appealing architecturally because of the wide variety of roof integration of PV-systems: flat roof PV systems on consoles, straightforward integration of PV on southoriented sloping roofs up to very challenging architectural/aesthetical solutions for PV with vertical panels.
