Popis: | Northland has completed Phase II data recovery excavations in the D-M-286 project area. Archaeological investigations were conducted in the eastern one-third of the project area, based on the results of Phase I investigations which encountered prehistoric cultural features in that portion of the parcel. Mechanical stripping in this area exposed 25 features in plan view. Northland completely excavated five pits, sampled 17 pits, and tested three pit houses with 1- by 2-m test units. Features were mapped, photographed, and recorded on appropriate forms. Artifacts and samples were collected from the excavated features and test units. Detailed maps of the features and project area were prepared showing feature extent, trench locations, locations of features and excavation units, artifact concentrations, and modern features or disturbances. No human remains were encountered. The D-M-286 project area is located in proximity to areas previously excavated by Arizona State University (ASU) at Los Solares1 (AZ T:12:50/37[ASM/ASU])(Henderson 1987). Those investigations defined a cluster of habitation features and related extramural and mortuary features, which were called the 21st/22nd Street Locus. During the current project, a similar range of feature types were encountered. These features, like those in the 21st/22nd Street Locus (Henderson and Rice 1987), were occupied during the Hohokam Colonial and Sedentary periods. The small sample within the D-M-286 project does not add significant new information to our knowledge of the site gained during the extensive excavations conducted by Arizona State University. For this reason, no further cultural resources investigations within the project area are recommended. However, if during future ground disturbing activities undocumented cultural resources (e.g., human remains, funerary objects) are encountered, then work should cease immediately, and the Arizona State Museum should be notified. |
