In industry there exists a need for high accuracy crack detection and sizing. Obtaining this data allows lifetime predictions of structural components to be calculated, optimising working life. One of the most common techniques employed for this non-destructive testing is the use of ultrasound. However, compression across the faces of cracks causes a reduction in the reflection of ultrasound due to an increase in the amount of contact. This paper seeks to assess crack face contact to determine the applicability of current ultrasonic reflection models and to provide direction to future investigation. The ultimate objective being to develop a modelling tool that will predict crack detectability under compressive loading. |
