Popis: Highly ordered and elaborate cytoplasmic complexes containing microtubular elements are described for the first time in the cyanophytesNostoc sphaericum andNostoc sp. Each complex consists of 2 major components: the dark, thin amorphous plate which can be considered as comparable to a “microtubular organizing center”; the second component, the perpendicular system, is made up of a large number of microtubular elements anchored to and oriented at right angles to the plate. These elements are made up of protofilaments and may penetrate into the nucleoplasm. A third component, the parallel system of microtubules, may occur on the opposite side of the plate. There are, as a rule, two microtubular complexes in each cell; each complex occupies the polar position and is located close to the septum on either side of the cell. Although their function is unknown at present, it is possible that they may represent a primitive form of “microtubular organizing center” which plays a part in division, and movement of the filaments.
