Polyacrylamide vertical gel electrophoresis was used to separate the whey proteins of sows' milk. Polymorphism was found in the fastest migrating region. The whey protein polymorphism consists of two bands which are controlled by two codominant alleles designated Wh 1 A and Wh 1 B . The subscript indicates the fastest migrating region. Homozygotes possess one band and heterozygotes possess both bands giving the following phenotypes: Wh 1 A, Wh 1 AB, and Wh 1 B. A chi-square test for goodness of fit of the observed phenotype to that expected by the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium formula and a segregation analysis of eight matings involving 18 female progeny conform to the hypothesis that the Wh 1 polymorphism is controlled by two codominant autosomal alleles. Further family studies will be necessary to confirm the genetic control of this whey protein polymorphism. |
