The multi-pixel camera development program for the 100 meter Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) requires high mass flow compressors to support the cryogenic load. Typically, existing infrastructure limits the compressor design to air cooling with one set of stainless steel lines to supply the gas. Since the required mass flow exceeds the capability of a single scroll compressor for, two 7.5 HP compressors are constructed along with a method for combing the gas flow. This technique is capable of suppling compressed He gas to the many Gifford McMahon refrigerators, provides remote monitoring and pressure control, and maintains a failsafe system of operation. |
