Detailed 3-D calculations have been conducted for estimating nuclear heating in cryo-temperature components by /sup 16/N gamma-rays emitted from blanket cooling water coming through upper ports of ITER. Total gamma-ray energy emitted by /sup 16/N in the cryostat is about 50 kW. Only 2.3% (1.1 kW) of the total energy is deposited in the cryo-temperature components. Local nuclear heat density in the superconductors and the absorption dose in the insulators are lower than design limits. Having an additional guard pipe around the cooling pipes may not be a strong requirement from a radiation shielding point of view. |
