Popis: | The planet's vulnerability to anthropogenic habitat loss is being answered by a new discipline, Habitat Restoration, a suite of practices intended to help “Mother Nature” heal through direct intervention by qualified scientists and contractors. As the public awareness of climate change arose, the academic community explored the techniques, outcomes and management of habitat sciences, and the early successes began to outweigh the failures. Whether it is driven by good will or regulatory pressure, the business community is finding ways to monetize and finance restoration. Here I describe some of the work being done in wetlands and other sensitive habitats around the world and opine on the history of the subject. The importance of habitat restoration is highlighted in the context of how we can increase ecosystem services as we conserve critical habitats for wildlife and for people. |
