Dipterocarp species have long been used as sources of timber for plywood, fiberboard, Prefix-board, molding and other building materials. To maintain production of dipterocarp timbers, enrichment planting programs have recently been started, and extensive plantations of dipterocarp species have been established (see Chapter 1, this volume). However, studies on diseases of trees in tropical plantations have mainly focused on fast-growing exotic species. Far less work has been done on diseases affecting dipterocarps, and more information is required (Elouard 1998) to ensure the success of the dipterocarp plantations and enrichment planting projects. |
