Popis: An inverse method for estimating the plane wave reflection coefficient of a stratified ocean bottom from the reflected field of a point source known at a finite number of receiver array points is described. Nothing need be assumed about the reflecting medium. Essentially, the individual phase shift and gain of each element of an arbitary listening array is found so as to ’’optimize’’ the estimation of the reflection coefficient at a specific angle of incidence, where optimization refers to improving resolution and maintaining accuracy. Computer simulations have been carried out and some results are shown.
