Popis: Data on the formation of surface structures during the adsorption of sulfur dioxide on alumina-supported metal and oxide catalysts in the presence of oxygen were reviewed. The results of our IR spectroscopic and thermal desorption studies of the interaction of the SO2+O2 mixture with the 9% Ni-Cu-Cr/2% Ce/(θ + α)-Al2O3 catalyst are presented. At 673 K chemisorption of SO2 takes place (absorption band 1165 cm−1, Tdesm = 673 K), and SO2 is oxidized to form sulfate structures (absorption bands 1235, 1140, 1100, 985, and 615 cm−1, Tdesm = 973 K), which decompose into SO2 and O2 at 973 K and decay when reduced in H2.
