The soil-borne mosaic inducing viruses (BaMMV, BaYMV, BaYMV-2) and the aphid-transmitted BYDV cause severe phytopathological problems in European barley production. Therefore, the development of resistant germplasm and varieties is considered as a major task of barley breeding, today. Concerning the mosaic inducing viruses different resistance genes have been located in the barley genome and the genetic relatedness between resistant varieties was estimated. Furthermore, PCR-based markers — especially RAPDs — have been developed facilitating efficient marker based selection procedures. Corresponding activities have been initiated to study the genetics of quantitatively inherited tolerance to BYDV. Results of these studies are briefly reviewed. |
