Popis: This secondary, exploratory data analysis project will use baseline (pre-intervention) self-report data from a previously conducted clinical trial (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT04634903). This study will examine access to mental health support during the COVID-19 pandemic (i.e., whether or not mental health support was available when needed) among adolescents in the United States (US) ages 13-16 identifying as both people of Color and as members of a sexual minority group. Using self-report data on perceived access to mental health support, self-report zip code data, and publicly-available data from Project Implicit, we will explore three primary questions: 1) How frequently are adolescents 13-16 identifying as both people of Color and as members of a sexual minority group able to access mental health support when they need it during the COVID-19 pandemic? 2) Do adolescents living in states characterized by higher levels of explicit anti-Black racism and higher levels of explicit homophobia report less access to mental health support, relative to adolescents living in states with lower levels of explicit anti-Black racism and lower levels of homophobia? 3) Do state-wide levels of explicit homophobia and explicit anti-Black racism relate to adolescents’ perceived access to mental health support over and above local availability of mental healthcare providers (per HRSA-generated, state-specific Mental Health Professional Shortage Area scores) and state-level income inequality—which have both been previously identified as important contributors to youth mental health treatment access.
