The I-895 bridge over US 1 and Patapsco River is a three-span continuous bridge consisting of seven welded steel plate girders. The bridge has a skew angle of approximately 35 degrees and the girder webs are made of 5/16-inch thick A36 steel plates of 90-inch in depth. Two girders were found with web fractures in March 2003. One interior girder had a full-depth web fracture initiated from the top of a transverse stiffener which is also a connection plate for the cross frame. One exterior girder also suffered a web fracture initiated from the top of an intermediate transverse stiffener. Emergency repairs were made to the fractured girders and in-depth analyses were performed to investigate possible causes. The analysis included material property tests, fractographic examination of fracture surfaces, structural analysis for load distribution and cross frame member forces, and finite element analysis of local stresses in areas where the fractures initiated. This paper summarizes preliminary findings from this investigation. |
