Interactive conversational agents for cigarette smoking and vaping cessation: A protocol for a mixed-methods systematic scoping review

Popis: Background: Digital technologies as tools for health promotion and preventive healthcare have yielded promising results in cigarette smoking and vaping cessation interventions. Interactive conversational agents, also known as “chatbots”, have the potential to increase the success rates of these interventions. However, chatbots appear to be underutilized to support cigarette smoking and vaping cessation. Thus, little is known about their integration, utility, and efficacy in these contexts of intervention. Objective: To explore current interactive conversational agents used in cigarette smoking and vaping cessation interventions and assess their utility and efficacy. Methods: A mixed methods systematic scoping review will be conducted according to the Arksey and O'Malley framework and the guidance of Peters et al. for systematic scoping reviews. A specific search strategy will be formulated for five of the most relevant databases to identify studies published in the last 20 years. Four reviewers will independently apply the inclusion criteria using the full texts and extract the data. Meta-analyses will also be conducted if studies are similar enough. Results: We will use structured narrative summaries of main themes to assess the utility and efficacy of currently available interactive conversational agents targeting cigarette smoking and vaping cessation. We will also summarize the differences and similarities between the conversational agents. Conclusions: This fundamental knowledge will be useful to guide the development of interactive conversational agents and their integration into already existing or future public health interventions targeting cigarette smoking and vaping.
