Popis: | QN I Why did you become a nurse? As a child I scolded my leg and as a result a District Nurse visited my home to undertake dressing changes. I remember being fascinated by her uniform and gloves. She was also very kind and told me a little about her work – this inspired me to follow in her footsteps and from an early age I read the Nursing Times, especially the recruitment section. This reinforced that as a nurse I could work anywhere and do anything. How has your career developed since you started nursing? I have been fortunate to work in a wide variety of settings and to meet some amazing patients, families and colleagues. I learnt from every role and feel that I have had the good fortune to find a mentor in each who has encouraged me to learn and grow. Although I never saw myself as a manager I now manage two teams within a hospice setting and I aim to help the teams become the best that they can be. I may not have a direct clinical role but I believe I can influence care by supporting my teams, enabling them to provide excellent care while growing and developing the service in response to changing needs. What does your current role entail? Currently my role involves managing a team of 14 community nurse specialists and a rapidly expanding hospice at home team. I endeavor to ensure that as a team we provide high standards of compassionate, holistic care. We are also innovative. The team is keen to move forward and enhance our services, my role therefore includes leading on projects, sourcing support and grants, submitting reports and statistics. I am also proud to be a Queens Nurse. What are the best and worst parts of your job? I enjoy seeing my teams grow and develop. It’s important to build upon individual strengths and skills as this gives a multifaceted team which can respond to wide ranging needs. The worst part of my role is losing direct patient care. Although I do provide limited telephone support to patients and families I miss face to face contact and being with a patient throughout their disease pathway. How do you see your role developing? I feel that my role will continue to grow and develop as the teams do. I hope to increase my clinical time by becoming more involved in outpatient clinics within the hospice. I also hope to help the teams continue to link into other services and organisations as we grow so much by exchanging ideas with peers. If you weren’t a nurse, what would you be? I would be a zoologist. What would you do if you were health secretary? I would invest in frontline services and address the waste and inappropriate expenditure within the current health care system.
