Over four decades, accredited zoos and aquariums have developed scientific and cooperative frameworks for ex situ programmes and become actively involved with all aspects and forms of species conservation. This has made them valued partners bringing unique skills, resources and contributions to the species conservation puzzle. This chapter illustrates the different roles that ex situ management plays in the conservation of the red panda. The global zoo populations are managed intensively to form an insurance for the wild population and preserve future conservation options including reintroduction or reinforcement. In partnership with range states and NGO’s, such as the Red Panda Network, the red panda ex situ community educates about red panda biology, habitat, threats and conservation; harnesses collective databases and unique skill sets to contribute to planning and implementation of field conservation; conducts research in zoos to increase the understanding of red panda biology; and provides and facilitates financial support. |
