Sepúlveda retaliated against Las Casas’s unlicensed publication of a composite record of the Valladolid debate by penning a furious response that offered further rebuttals of Las Casas’s claims and accused him of an array of heresies. Sepúlveda used his response as part of an effort to have Las Casas’s publication publicly banned by the Inquisition. The text, Proposiciones temerarias, escandalosas y heréticas, written around 1553–54, which was not published until three centuries after his death, is here translated into English for the first time. It is accompanied by a Declaración, a digest of Proposiciones temerarias, that Sepúlveda may have prepared as part of his denunciation of Las Casas to the Inquisition. |
