This research is a preliminary survey to explore a possible analogy between the chemistry of the NH singlet radical and its electronic isomer, O( 1 D). The flash decomposition of HN 3 forms NH(a 1 Δ) as the predominant observable primary product. The time dependence of the absorption by NH(X 3 Σ − ), NH(a 1 Δ), NH 2 , N 3 , the emission by NH( 3 Π), NH( 1 Π), and the initial and final absorbance by HN 3 were observed and correlated. The decomposition appears to result from the electrical disturbance which accompanies the photolysis flash rather than (or in addition to) photolysis. The disappearance of NH(a 1 Δ) is consistent with the mechanism The combined rate of disappearance of NH(a 1 Δ) by all processes, 2.5 ± 1.0 × 10 −11 cm 3 /molecule sec, is independent of inert gas pressure, although the product distribution is not. The implications of this result are discussed. |
