Popis: In recent years, renewable energy sources like wind and photovoltaic (PV) are rapidly installed in South Australia. Amongst different states of Australia, it has the highest level of combined wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) generation. A survey of literature reveals that wind turbines and rooftop solar PV are unlike synchronous machines, which can deliver inertia and governor response to control frequency variation after a disturbance. Therefore, the growth of renewable energy generation combined with the withdrawal of traditional synchronous machines may cause new frequency challenges in a low inertia power system. This paper presents the findings of frequency response in a low inertia power system and a possible solution is also provided to improve frequency performance, which is utilizing HVDC support. A comparative study is performed to investigate the frequency response of simplified 14-Generator South-East Australian equivalent network by using PSS/E.
