Popis: Yttrium iron garnet films were coated with lead and annealed in vacuum at temperatures of 250 and 308°C. The depth profiles of Pb into YIG as well as other interface properties were investigated with AES, ISS and XPS. No measurable diffusion effect was observed at these temperatures. At 300°C oxygen dissociated and diffused into the lead overlayer. XPS measurements indicated that the binding energy of lead in the oxygen environment was the same as that of pure lead. Binding energy values of Fe, Y and O in YIG are reported. Boron and sulphur were found to segregate at temperatures higher than 500°C in uncoated specimens. The influence of these contaminants on optical damping properties has to be considered.
