Popis: | Modern medical therapies have substantially decreased the risk of cardiac and cerebral vascular events due to atherosclerosis, and these approaches largely apply to patients with atherosclerotic disease of the carotid artery. There is strong evidence for risk reduction in these patients via use of antihypertensives, statins, and in most cases antithrombotic medication of some sort. Lower levels of evidence support risk reduction with interventions such as lowering HgA1c in diabetics, tobacco cessation, exercise, diet and weight loss. Internal carotid artery dissection or webs represent less common situations where best antithrombotic or interventional therapies are still not clear. |
