Humanity has been unraveling the basic workings of the solar system since some unknown skygazer first began tallying the Moon’s phases, perhaps tens of thousands of years ago. In just the last two generations, we’ve gone from being passive observers of the Moon and planets to active participants in the solar system. We’ve witnessed the first tentative steps of humans on the Moon – an act we won’t see repeated for decades. Spacecraft have flown past every planet and numerous comets and asteroids, and probes have landed on the Moon, Venus, Mars, the asteroids Eros and Itokawa, and Saturn’s fascinating frozen moon, Titan. Other missions are now en route to the newly reclassified dwarf planets, Pluto and Ceres, and chasing comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, which in a few years may make history as the location of the first comet landing. |
