The outward growth of cities over time is uneven. As a result, fringe belts, which are composed of a characteistic mixture of land use units initially seeking peripherical, cheaper location, appear. JWR. Wnitehand brought together the fringe belt theory and a land rent theory. This allows to explain the city spreading mechanisms and the land occupation discontinuities on urban fringes. Moreover, the still unknown theory in France revives the study of urban morphology thanks to its theoritical, deductive and dynamic dimensions. |
