The threat, morbidity, and high incidence of tubal pregnancy are widely recognized. The etiologic factors have not been clearly identified in the past. This study was initiated to survey possible causative factors in this antibiotic era. Sixty-four cases were studied prospectively and 84 others reviewed retrospectively. Tubal pathology, history, and clinical and operative findings were critically reviewed. This report indicates that chronic follicular salpingitis is the most common single morphologic finding. There was a striking absence of any other abnormal histologic finding. In addition, there is a significant relationship to age, parity, and abortion. Women in the older reproductive age groups, with high parity or with a history of one or more abortions, appeared to have greater predisposition to tubal pregnancy in this study. Relationship of chronic follicular salpingitis to other probable etiologic factors and specific clinical findings is presented. |
