Popis: | The cheliceral stylets of Pyemotes tritici (Lagreze-Fossat and Montane) were studied, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Capable of independent motion, the styliform cheliceral digits are grooved medially along their entire length and can be brought tightly together, forming a tube-like structure. An unpaired ancillary or accessory structure was observed fitted along the cheliceral groove to a point midway along its length. The structure appeared tube-like and could extend to the end of the cheliceral stylets. This previously undescribed structure is homologized with the labrum. Consideration of the events necessary for successful mite feeding in the context of our SEM observations suggests that each of the cheliceral stylets and the labrum are eversible into the host tissue fluids and that each of these structures may possess distal innervation. The cheliceral stylets are curved and when protruded unequally, a gap is formed between them near the distal tip. Toxin produced in the modified ... |
