I outline a theoretical framework for conceptualizing radical Islam in terms of underlying theme(s) and their enablers or backers. I propose to divide radicalization process into primary and secondary ones, the former identified with the onset of radicalization in a community and the latter developing in communities with longstanding exposure to the phenomenon. By analyzing the threat of Muslim radicalism with a particular focus on Kosovo, I propose the following primary explanation of the phenomenon: Backed by the prestige and resources of Saudi Arabia, religious leaders have popularized the appealing theme of sharia as all-encompassing “divine law” to advance radical Islamist agendas. By associating sharia with the theme and religious leaders as the enablers, such an explanation opens up the possibility of advancing our understanding of the causes and backers of the global threat. |
