The development of techniques for the reliable joining of ceramics to ceramics or metals is an essential prerequisite to the broader usage of advanced ceramics for engineering applications. Current methods are described including form and force fit joints, glueing, brazing and welding. Both current and emerging industrial applications are used as illustrations. There are needs for improved, more-refractory brazes for high temperature thermo-mechanical uses, and also for better understanding of the stresses near the joint and how these relate to appropriate material properties. |
