In Western countries the incidence of large bowel cancer is high and second only to that of lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women [1]. Survival rates have improved since 1950, but only as a result of an increased resectability rate and decreased peroperative mortality [2]. The prognosis of a patient is mainly determined by the stage of the tumor at initial presentation. Most patients die due to disseminated disease in the liver. Already on first presentation 15%–35% of the patients have apparent or occult liver metastases, whereas two thirds of the patients will have them by the time of their death [3]. Treatment of disseminated disease by chemotherapy is disappointing. |
