Popis: Natural sources (microorganisms, plants, and animals) contain a large variety of pharmacologically active compounds which are used therapeutically as such. In many other cases natural compounds have been used as models for the synthesis of a whole series of drug families. To the first group belong, e. g., cardiac glycosides, cancerostatic indol alkaloids (vincristine and vinblastine), anthraquinones, and many antibiotics. To the second group belong the local anesthetics which have been derived from cocaine, the muscle relaxants derived from Strychnos and Menispermaceous alkaloids, spasmolytics derived from atropine, or analgesics derived from morphine.
