New boron-containing polystyrene scintillators based on 3-hydroxiflavone

Popis: | New boron-containing polystyrene scintillators of two different compositions were synthesized on the basis of 3-hydroxyflavone: styrene + 2% para-terphenyl + 1% 3-hydroxyflavone and styrene + 1% 3-hydroxyflavone. A scintillator of well-known standard composition (styrene + 2% para-terphenyl + 0.01% 1,4-bis-(5-phenyloxazolyl-2-yl)-benzene) was used for comparison. A boron-containing compound (1,2-dicarba-clozododekaboran-12) was added to all of the scintillators so that the boron concentrations in each scintillation composition were 1.84, 3.72, 5.11, and 10.22%. Measurements of the light yields in the scintillators demonstrated the acceptable efficiency of the new samples (which had boron concentrations as high as 10.22%) in detecting neutrons and α particles. The light yields in the new samples are lower than those in scintillators of standard composition by a factor of ∼2. |
