Orbital Sciences Corporation, under contract to Lockheed Martin, designed, built, and verified Orion Launch Abort System developmental flight test hardware intended for future use on human spaceflight missions. Human spaceflight necessitates increased scrutiny by the certifying government authority and customer in comparison to uncrewed space systems due to the risk to human life. This paper describes lessons learned and complications encountered with using a verification method based approach for the Pad Abort test. This paper recommends a comprehensive requirement based verification approach for human rated space systems based on this experience. |
