The changes in the structural parameters of highly oriented polyethylene irradiated with different doses of γ-radiation, under the action of tensile stresses and at given strains are studied by X-ray diffraction at large and small angles. After irradiation with comparatively high doses there is a change in the character of the relation between the parameters a and c and the applied stress and an increase in the apparent elasticity modulus of the lattice. Cross-linking of the macromolecules in the amorphous and crystalline phases leads to a more uniform distribution of the mechanical stresses in the sample, which is manifested in particular in a smaller compliance of the amorphous regions on strain. |
