Ultrasound is widely used among critical care providers for both diagnostic evaluations and procedural guidance. The proliferation of this as a tool is guided by the convenience, portability, and safety it provides. Focusing on decreasing mortality and the obvious benefit of early recognition of shock, as described by Rivers in 2001, critical care ultrasound has broad utility for diagnostic capabilities in not only shock, but trauma, cardiac failure, hemorrhage, and resuscitation efforts for the critically ill patient. As such, ultrasound has become a fundamental instrument in the armamentarium of critical care medicine. |
