Popis: The MIT Community Challenge is a project created in response to mental health and wellbeing concerns on MIT's campus. Surveys given by the chancellor indicate that students at MIT feel that the academic environment negatively impacts their wellbeing to a far greater extent than students in other competitive university environments. We seek to approach these challenges by creating a web-based platform to facilitate giving, an activity which has been shown to improve personal wellbeing and community connectedness, while simultaneously providing a way to provide insights into the factors that might best facilitate pro-social behavior. In this paper, we identify a set of high-level goals and design variables for such an intervention, as well as learnings from the first iteration that serve as a source of data for understanding how to facilitate giving in future iterations of the platform or in similar communities elsewhere.
