True allegations of rape are not always believed, by people in general, but also by criminal investigators. Criminal investigators do not seem to be better than lay people in identifying true allegations as true, and false allegations as false. It seems better to believe all allegations of rape since true allegations are far more prevalent than false allegations. Contrary to how rapists are depicted in movies and by news agencies, most rapists try to mimic consensual sexual relations when raping. Therefore, true allegations are characterized by a lot of pseudo-intimate, and pseudo-considerate behavior and interaction. False complainants have to fabricate a rape that did not occur, and that they did not experience, which leads to detectable differences between false and true allegations of rape. Results of prior studies show that a typical false allegation of rape will contain only one sexual act and position, and the duration of the rape is brief and to the point, while a typical true allegation is the opposite. |
