There is an increasing interest on the part of local and national authorities on the impact of new highway projects upon the noise pollution of the environment in communities throughout the nation. This paper is a continuation of previous work [“Methodology for Highway Noise Prediction,” D. L. Nelson, C. G. Gordon, and W. J. Galloway, Paper 7A7, 78th Meeting Acoust. Soc. Amer., October 1969, San Diego, California] and discusses a methodology by which the highway designer can predict expected noise levels from a highway during its design stages and compare them with design criteria. The design criteria developed is based on task interference considerations such as speech and sleep. The methodology is presented by means of an example in which noise contours were developed for a proposed highway configuration. The impact of the highway on the community is evluated using the design criteria and the existing ambient noise levels. |
